Qualifications include attending home births in a formal, yet traditional apprenticeship with a clinical preceptor from 2002 to 2006. During the same period of time I studied and graduated with an academic diploma from the National College of Midwifery, approved by the Medical Board of California. I apprenticed with a Certified Nurse Midwife who has many years of home birth experience, going back to the seventies. For more than four years we worked together in the home birth setting, exclusively. In 2006, upon qualifying and passing the eight hour national midwifery exam administered by the North American Registry of Midwives I earned the credential of Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and was issued a Midwife License (LM) by the State of California.
My focus turned intensely towards the birthing family, babies, and bonding while expecting our own first baby, over 24 years ago. Having gained that first birth experience, our second and third babies were born at home with the assistance of our midwife Tosi Marceline, in 1988 and 1993.
I began attending births in 1990. I started by supporting mothers at home, birth center, and hospitals during their labor, birth, and early postpartum period. I have enjoyed more than nineteen continuous years of active birth work and advocacy for childbearing families.
My education has included training as a Childbirth Assistant with the National Association of Childbirth Assistants and Childbirth Educator training with the International Childbirth Education Association. I also attended Midwife Assistant training to increase my skills and knowledge. I have trained and certified with Birth Works® International, the Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators, DONA International, Prenatal Parenting®, HypnoBirthing® and Hypno Fertility.
My work included serving as a volunteer chapter leader for the International Cesarean Awareness Network in the mid-1990s. I dedicated a decade to listening to and learning from the women of ICAN. All the while, I attended mothers during birth as their doula or midwife's assistant.
I maintain current certification in Neonatal Resuscitation based on the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, and I am CPR certified, since 1999.
I maintain membership with Midwives of North America and the California Association of Midwives. Additionally, I am currently certified in Hypnosis and maintain professional membership with the National Guild of Hypnotists.
